ITV
Pre-ITV check to pass the Spanish MOT first time.
The ITV is Spain's roadworthiness test, the equivalent of the MOT. We check lights, brakes, tyres, play in the suspension, emissions and warning lights before your test, and tell you what could fail.
In a nutshell
- A pre-ITV check at GSP Garage costs from €35 including IGIC and takes about 45 minutes, in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife.
- The ITV (Inspección Técnica de Vehículos) is the Spanish equivalent of the British MOT test.
- A private car needs its first ITV at 4 years old, then every 2 years until it is 10, and every year after that.
- If anything would fail the ITV, GSP Garage gives you a written quote to fix it before the test.
What we check
- Lights. Dipped beam, main beam, indicators, brake lights, number plate light and headlight aim.
- Brakes. Efficiency, imbalance between wheels and handbrake.
- Tyres. Tread, condition and that they match the registration papers.
- Suspension and steering. Play, ball joints and leaks.
- Engine. Emissions and warning lights on the dashboard.
- Visibility. Glass, wipers, seat belts and horn.
When your ITV is due
A private car has its first ITV at 4 years old. After that, every 2 years until it is 10 and then every year. The date is on the ITV card and on the sticker on the windscreen.
If you are re-registering a UK car in Spain, it also has to pass an ITV. A pre-ITV check tells you beforehand what needs changing. The paperwork itself is handled by a gestoría.

What fails the ITV most often?
Mainly blown bulbs or badly aimed headlights, worn tyres, unbalanced brakes, play in the suspension and warning lights on the dashboard.
